Yeah, if you wanna be lazy and just listen to Metal Hammer bands then you're gonna get crap. Metal is as good as it's ever been. Better even. You just gotta have some initiative and go and look.

SLIPKN0T!!1!

Well, there is Dragonforce and Nightwish, and Iron Maiden is still touring. Dark Tranquility is pretty good, and I guess Dimmu Borgir is too.

I've been enjoying a lot of Nachtmystium and Oranssi Pazuzu lately, both of whom sound kind of like if Pink Floyd and Darkthrone had a baby.

Look up "Weightless" by Animals As Leaders. Great band and song.

Well ok, I do admit that some of these underground bands sound promising.
I know that if you look hard enough, you’re bound to find something interesting.

Nevertheless, regarding to my personal taste, it is still very hard to find albums of consistent quality like I easily did in the past.
Albums like: Toxicity, The Downward spiral, Blues for the red sun, Chaos Ad, Angel Dust, Around the fur,Vulgar Display of Power……….

Sure there are, you just have to look. There's a lot of good modern Thrash Metal bands (referred to as the New Wave Of Thrash Metal), like Toxic Holocaust, Warpath (UK), Lich King, and Gama Bomb.

Eh, really? "City" sounds godawful, and to give a specific example "Underneath the Waves" is terrible. Those effects have not aged gracefully.
