Who gives a ****? No, really, who gives a **** what you classify your music as.

I think grunge is the most bs genre term ever, but I still use it to describe Nirvana, AIC, etc.

Tbh, it's not significant enough an issue, when I'm talking to friends about music, I don't think I ever mention genres.

I've seen some musicologist file hip hop music and Electronica under Rock and Roll. I don't see them being properly classified under Rock and Roll (but since people here like to make issue over small stuff) I thought I'd defer what I've seen others classify them as.

My opinion is since instrumentation if very different in hip hop music and Electronica to Rock music then it should be a genre out-side of Rock and Roll.

I really appreciate the context of sub-genres, it helps me look for more types of sound that I like and grab more of it. I can still remain open minded while doing so by not restricting which forums I read.

I'm an obsessive sub-genre nut, even though at times I'm not always sure which sub-genre an album should go into. But as said above it does help me to enjoy the music better, by giving me extra things to look for in the music.

Maybe I'm a little to guilty for having a hard on for metal and my tastes are't as varied as I thouht they were, though genres like polka are a little to....... hard to listen to for me. Though I respect it, I respect pretty much every artist (cept some of the top 40 artists, a lot of them are *******s)

i honestly think that Metal doesn't need that many sub-genres
it seems like a way to be more special than the rest

you could do the same thing with punk and call some bands "Political punk" or "Slow punk" or "Story punk" (that would be punk while narrating a story)

i do agree these Sub genre serve as a reference, but new ones keep popping up and ppl keep using them as a way to feel more special than the rest

There's a pretty appreciable difference between a band like Type O Negative and Cannibal Corpse that even the most ignorant person would have trouble denying, and that's where genre labels come in handy. It's when people start compartmentalizing subgenres that it gets a little taxing, or when people start creating their own genres based on the subject matter of the lyrics, like "Pirate metal" or "Love metal". Sorry, one of those is power metal with fantasy lyrics replaced with songs about pirates, and the other is a pussified version of gothic metal.

Yeah, sub-genres do come in handy when trying to get into a style of music with different off shoots.

I couldn't imagine having to get into styles within a genre without some sort of labeling.

The idea of these sub-genres is a good one. I am guessing the OP just meant people should stop fighting when it comes to what sub-style is better?
