I think Korn owes most of their success to Primus, tbh.

So yeah, I'd give that distinction to one of their albums instead, considering their version of "Blind" is just way better.

I totally forgot about Primus! And apparently Godflesh already had the tuned down guitars and some super slow songs back in 1989. I'm listening to both these bands right now. Korn's debut album seems like a combination of Streetcleaner and Sailing the Seas of Cheese, transitioning between the funk metal of Primus on songs like Ball Tongue and Need To, to slow haunting Godflesh type songs like Clown and Predictable. I'm loving Streetcleaner. IMO Jonathan Davis had much stronger vocals than Justin Broadrick though. He just had such a powerful presence on the debut album.

Korn is one of those bands that I can't believe are still going. On one hand I respect their perseverance, but on the other I just really don't want to hear any more by them.

If I ever had to listen to a Korn album, I would pick their debut for sure. I agree it's the best they've got. If I want to listen to a metal album in general, however, it's incredibly rare that I would go to Korn. But I guess it has happened.

Darkest and most ground breaking of its time, though? Nah. They were definitely one of the most popular, but as people have been pointing out here others did what they were trying to do already (and better, imo).

I'll say this, though. I sometimes wonder how things would have gone if Limp Bizkit hadn't been around. While there was surely a giant tidal wave of crappy nu metal in the late 90's, Limp Bizkit were one of the most prominent and honestly did the most damage to whatever positive reputation nu metal may have had. If nu metal had stayed raw and underground, maybe it would have spawned more creativity and have as much respect as any other of the 1000 different metal subgenres. And maybe Korn's debut would be seen as a classic. Who knows...

/\ I agree, I haven't bought a Korn album since Issues, and I was disappointed with Issues. That's when they noticeably started going to a more electronic/Industrial sound (although there were hints of it on Follow the Leader) that was much more akin to alternative metal than their dark nu metal roots. By the time untouchables came out their style didn't even resemble their debut album anymore, as it was plagued big ballad songs and HUGE choruses dominated by Davis' new singing style that I wasn't fond of.

im a big korn fan and all i gots to say is .... I don't even think Korn is a Metal band or NU metal band

there just a Alt Hard rock band

sooo.. if u go into any korn album lookin for Metal man that's not the right mindset

ive always felt even korn them selfs think of them selfs has a alt rock band


and that's one of the reasons korn has had longevity and success because after LIP they tried to change it up and turn lanes each album because who wants S/t 11 times in a row screw that

that's why devil drier IMO is stuck in a loop or rut they have made the same album like 5 times in a row now there mindset is lets get heavier and heavier each album but they never changed there style not even in different methods of being heavy nothing

Show me what is hard rock and not metal about that...it's not even one of their heavier songs...I am not speaking to how good or bad they are, just the labeling. Nu Metal would not be what it is/was without Korn brodaddio.
