Lyrically, it can be about a lot of topics. Be it gore, satanic, political or cultural (think Nile, and their Egyptian inspired lyrics) or death with other subject matter that can be philosophical at times.
Yeah, I've got a singing education, as I have sung Opera for a while, and I also know how to growl and scream very well, but I usually don't do it, because it ****s up my throat..so I know it's hard..but such a load of bands sound like they don't even try, yknow?

to the subject of lyrics: I love the lyrics of Death.. For me, that's how a lot of lyrics should sound like.. in every style of music.. Very poetic and dreamy, with the contrast of extreme music, makes it kinda cool

I mean, it takes proper technique to do well. Like you say, the way it fucks up the throat. To do that for long periods of time, for shows that can be a couple hours, night after night, you must train yourself to know how to push yourself and pull off that type of voice without causing damage to the throat and vocal chords. Proper technique is a must.

Nothing but slaying, this album has a good 8994 discernible riffs per song and wicked occult keyboard breakdowns

So this came out last year, evil and crushing beyond belief. A black metal band playing death metal, or perhaps vice versa

Can this be death metal AOTY if it's basically from 1993?

ok. Immolation sucks. I'm sorry :P

But the other two I kinda liked.
Atheist was actually pretty cool, and I liked that he switched between screaming and growling. Also the lyrics were good. Very dark, but good.

Neuraxis actually sounds a bit like In Flames.
I think they've been influenced a lot by them.
They take a bit of the melodic part out,
and insert more death. It's cool, would listen to that more often

So it's safe to assume you just don't like legit death metal a la Bolt Thrower and Immolation and junk

Check out Martyr if you dig Atheist or Death.

That's a given.
Especially growling is hell.
I've learned how to reduce the damage a lot,
but if you are not careful, you will not be able to speak ever again,
if you do it too much.. and I can't even afford the well techniqued growling,
because there is no way you can do this, without damaging your throat.
And I could never sing operettes again.

Bolt Thrower will always equal love to me. I remember seeing the video for "Epitaph" and thinking they had something so unique to them at that time.

I must have wore out a copy of "War Master" in no time. "The IVth Crusade" is in my running for favorite albums too.
