I don't get the velvet underground?

Well that definitely proves that David Bowie was a fan of velvet underground (which I was already was aware of) but it in no way proves that Bowies music was influenced by them.

Why? because he is not an exact replica of the VU? influence doesn't necessarily mean he has to sound like them but that they influenced him to make better music.

it totally proves they influenced him enough to make a similar song to VU which he wrote as a tribute to them for influencing him!!

I actually like the Bowie song (Queen Bitch) better than anything by VU.

And yes there has to be an influence in the sound, whether it be chord proggession, vocal resemblance, or what have you.

I hear a similarity in some tracks but Bowie is known for following his own vibe.

And wheter you guys think so or not the fact is he has mentioned them as a personal influence, isn't that proof enough?

Maybe Bowie was just being modest with his comment concerning VU. He was also a good friend and fan of Marc Bolan, but that doesn't mean he was in any way influenced by T Rex musically.

I just don't see Velvet Underground making David Bowie a better musician just because he is a fan of their music, come on be real.

It has to come straight out of the music itself, show me a David Bowie song that sounds similar to the sound of Velvet Underground.
If you look hard enough you can always find similarities between all bands and/or artist musically. The musical influence has to be obvious to the ears without searching and trying to convince someone that is it is there when its not. Show me some proof to back your statement, that's all I'm asking.
The main point I'm trying to make is that Velvet Underground is way overrated by the masses and nothing more.

Yea but see, under that logic every artist would have to sound too alike their influences in order for you to acknowledge it as an influence.

And that is not the case for alot of artists influenced by others, we don't really know what they personally drawed from the bands but if they cite them as an influence that should be proof enough they influenced him.
