Vio-lence's "Eternal Nightmare" has the best guitar in thrash metal. Fight me.

This is why you are the pleb. You look to further ideas and assume that they are necessarily superior simply by being more stylistically advanced. Vio-lence are Bonded By Blood perfected and that is all that you need for thrash since thrash is a genre defined by immediacy and virulence.

Clever riffs are neat if they can be integrated into that immediacy in a way that pushes the assault forward, but if all it does is make it more "interesting" then it is a losing proposition. What matters is the ultimate brutality and Eternal Dirge, Watchtower, and Testament simply do not deliver on that front when you have Vio-lence to blow them away. The simple fact is that I'd rather punch someone in the face to Vio-lence than I would to Eternal Dirge and that is the last word.

on batlords insistence I just listened to this

I actually do think it’s top tier thrash but not because of the guitar work but what puts it over the edge into full greatness is the vocals

almost universally every vocalist is in someway compromised by figuring out how to fit the lyrics into the song but this dude is like note for note that he sings is the most interesting thing going on and that’s saying a lot because the band is obviously going full throttle

It sort of reminds me of the vocals of some punk bands for example flipper mdc and circle jerks but he’s more frantic and avant-garde. It’s so musical and non-distracting, I mean it demands attention but it doesn’t distract - it’s almost like a crazy jazz pianist or something

hell the **** yeah the singer is amazing. he's got this amazing cadence that he sings in that is wild and off the rails but always serves the rhythms of the songs that makes the off-kilter manic music all that much more intense like you're about to get stabbed in the face at any given moment.

he doesn't have a voice that is immediately noticeable as great but his performance style is as ****ing kick you in the face as any brilliant musician. tbh i didn't mention him cause he gets a lot of **** for not sounding like a metal singer should sing but he's absolutely integral to the band being ****ing perfect on this album.

but seriously though the guitar work is in fact the best of possibly any thrash album ever and you need to recognize that. there's a reason this is a top 5 metal album for me. the way i think of it is the most brutal and methamphetamine-addled new york hardcore album ever made.

Oh and this is a performance from the early 00s that was a bonus disc from the rerelease of Eternal Nightmare that's possibly the best live thrash album I've ever heard. The version of "Kill on Command" from this is the first Vio-lence song I ever heard and it's still one of the most brutal thrash performances I've ever heard. You need this.

It is a tall order, but no other thrash album I've heard has guitar as visceral and manic. It flirts with tech thrash, but never crosses that border to be textural while being something akin to textured that never sacrifices pure force for something that's simply "interesting". Everything about the guitar on that album is pure, well, violence.

Nope. Slayer and Vio-lence tbh have entirely different styles. Slayer brought metal guitar to the precipice of modernity, but only ever looked over the wall and showed us the way. They're amazing in their own way, but Vio-lence were on the other side of that wall where things like death metal, black metal, tech thrash, tech death, brutal death, etc would take metal guitar in a more cerebral direction where Slayer could not follow because that simply wasn't in their talent base.

I am not someone who claims that that wall is a dividing line of quality, but my point is that Vio-lence were in a place that Slayer could not have imitated, and in Vio-lence's case they delivered in a way that justified making that separation. Vio-lence's riffs are cerebral in a way that is entrancing, but they never cross that further threshold where the music loses immediate punch and becomes abstract, which is a place that is sadly rare since many bands do not have the imagination and talent to keep that balance. It's a place where None So Vile also resides and lo and behold I dick suck that album too.
