Yeah, The Minutemen were darlings of the early SST days. Everybody loved them. If I had to guess which SST band most greatly influenced The Pixies I’d say Husker Du. The Meat Puppets obviously influenced Nirvana (plus the Minutemen, Pavement, and Lou Barlow).

Anyway, I don’t have any problem with you spreading some love around for The Minutemen. They deserve it. I kind of think they’re underrated right now but that’s just a phase. They have a permanent place in rock’n’roll history and in a few years everyone will be tripping all over themselves to be their biggest fans again.

If a band gets over-rated then the over-raters are oblivious fans fanatical about their favorite bands obliviously. It's possible for people to disagrees with the over-rating without it coming down to "backlashing."

No. It was to do with who is doing the influencing on bands e.g. like Nirvana: Pixies or other Post-Punk, and Hardcore bands. ^ Sorry Neapolitan ! I realise now that it looks that way on the page, but I wasn't particularly thinking of your comment when I talked about "resentful backlash". I was thinking in general terms about what happens with over-hyped bands. To me, "backlash" is not even a critical word to be using, but "resentful" is unkinder than it should've been. I wish now I had written, "Popular bands get over-played or over-rated and then comes an inevitable re-adjustment."

As regards "poking a little fun" at an artist - yes, I love to do that all the time. Again, I didn't intend to brand you as "resentful" or complain that you were writing something negative about The Pixies; I hope I'm not that hypocritical, especially when, as you point out, I'd done it myself a couple of posts earlier.

And just for the record: my policy on MB is to be polite to fellow members, but to have the right to say unkind things about artists' public-domain material. IMO that is a price they have to pay for taking their songs to the market place. So please, Neapolitan or anyone else, continue to chip in with opinions; from the scathing or the idolatrous, they are all welcome as far as I'm concerned. After all, sharing opinions is exactly what MB is here for !

I didn't say 'OccultHawk, your under the belief ...' I said 'If you're under the belief ...' it's like saying "If youz are under the belief ..." or "If one is under the belief ..." It was a "generic you" - not that you are generic.

Song #5: Guided By Voices - Back to the Lake (2002)

Previous songs so far have been from the 80s/90s, so this is ten years more modern, although ironically, it sounds to me as if it could have come from the 70s.

This is a well-crafted pop/rock song built up from a strong, gets-under-your-skin riff which makes it very catchy. I liked it for the two listens I've given it, but tbh (as with pop/rock from the 70s) I don't think it would maintain my interest for long.

Yeah, Black Francis of the Pixies was bigger fame-wise, but D. Boon was bigger weight-wise. D. Boon never got as big as Black Francis fame-wise though Black Francis tried to get bigger than D. Boon weight-wise, but failed. Anyway D. Boon was way cooler and aint nothin' can take that away from him.

Song #6: Sonic Youth - Society is a Hole (1985)

I love the start of this song and the slow, deconstructed sound of the instruments. It's from 1985 but is the most musically adventurous song so far; for me it's the best recommendation yet. I thought the vocals didn't rise to the same level as the rest of it though; the dreary repetition of the title brings the song down quite a bit imo. Perhaps that was the guy's intention, but as Ken Kesey once remarked to a tedious, grumbling young man, "I'm not interested in your bad trip."

Apart from that, though, I genuinely liked this rec. Thanks.
