I do love the Beatles though. (:
"Most Influential Rock Artist Ever"

EDIT - This isn't meant to be rude in any way, as they probably are the greatest pop act. But rock wise I don't think they're that great.

That's pretty much what I'm saying. You haven't been impressed by the Beatles, because you haven't listened to enough music (I'm not insulting you in any way, you said yourself that you have listened to rock music only for an year). When you listen to more music I think you will understand how important, unique and amazing they were in the 60s. Their songs sound to you that childish-catchy style, because their melodies and songwriting style have been so influential and used by many pop musicians and sounds kinda cliched. The person above me said it very well: like it or not, they are the most influential (and what is more, they were also the greatest songwriters of all time), which actually makes them the greatest artist of all time.
P.S. Don't think that I'm a blind Beatles fan, there are more than 10 bands which I like much more.

Fair.

I have heard people say that they took a sound that was innovative and happening at the time and then made it popular, how true is this?

Still can't help thinking they're overrated though (especially John Lennon). What do I need to listen to to hear them at their "best"? Revolver and Sgt. Pepper were good pop music but I've got tons of albums I think are better than those.

This is kinda what I was getting at with my above post, I've heard so many people say this. The music itself doesn't seem all that imo.

FWIW, I picked VU on the poll.

Influence is the most over-rated trait of praising a band.

If it actually meant something I would spend all my time listening to Robert Johnson & the Velvet Underground.

But I don't, so essentially it's meaningless.

I disagree. I think ass shape is the most overrated trait of praising a band.

Well, everyone takes a sound that is already happening at the time, I mean if we want a completely original and not influenced by anything music, we should go back to primitive people and the first person who started making rhythms with bones or sticks or whatever. So, the question is how much an artist can develop and improve this sound. And I think that The Beatles are one of the best examples for that. I think that John Lennon (in his solo career) was overrated, though.
Try "Help", "Abbey Road" and my favorite - "Rubber Soul" - great, great albums.

Listening to a band because it's influential is really stupid. But when ranking the greatest bands you can't take influence as a factor. Influence = what the artist did for the music and how he changed it, so it's important one way or another.

Surely without influence, music stays the same and doesn't move forward, therefore it's one of the most important things?

I didn't say it wasn't a factor, I said I thought it was an over-rated factor.

^ Although for me it isn't overrated (it's just how we understand "important" and "overrated"), you are right, too.
