I read a lot of music discussions, criticism, etc. I didn't realize my personal friend group needed to be heavily into classic rock.

I'd say either or both of the guys had been listening to Jimmy Webb's song The Highwayman, which is very similar in style.
They probably both knew Jimmy Webb, though I do find Mark Knopfler's style to be confident enough not to think of him as a mimic.. of course there are usually similarities in style to predecessors in any genre.

It's certainly not mimicking Webb's song, or plagiarising it in any way. What reminded me of it so strongly was firstly, the past tense narration "I was...", "I did such-and-such...", and secondly the two narrators, which reminded me of the well-known version by The Highwaymen in which Johnny, Waylon, Willie and Kris take turns with the verses.

This kind of lyric structure is often a feature of folk. Like you, I prefer Knopfler when he sounds folky, not so much when he's bluesy. That's probably because I am not the world's greatest blues fan in the first place.

Of course they don't. The point I was making was that you made a comment asking something which you then admitted you knew nothing about. I just wondered why you asked it and then shrugged off the answer, like me saying why is west coast rap not better known and you saying it is and me saying well I don't listen to west coast rap. Makes no sense. If you're not familiar with something why make a comment like you did?

As for MK, I personally was bored ****less with STP, sorry. I find his best material outside of DS can be found in movies, of which he has done a lot.

Guybrush, when it comes to good music......never enough....

Great listening to all of those and going to use some of them as a Mark Knopfler thread on another place I hang about.
