Tony Iommi's classical side is easily overlooked

I would take Iommi's solo on "Lonely is the Word" above anything I ever heard from Page.

Does that mean I think Page sucks? Of course not. It just means I enjoy Iommi more. As a BAND, I think Zep made more interesting music than most of Sabbath -- much as I adore Sabbath.

I used to give more points to Zepp for versatility, I still might, but Sabbath is more versatile than one might think.

Considering that Sabbath are the biggest single influence on both thrash and doom metal bands, both of which are at opposite ends of metal in terms of speed, their versatility was one of the best around for a 1970s heavy act.

i'd think, however, Deep Purple's Highway Star had a bigger influence on thrash

In that case you need to go further back with the In Rock album one of the fastest and heaviest of its time.

Considering Tony Iommi was part of one of the best heavy metal bands in history, yes, it's a pretty legitimate question to ask.

I would beg to differ, based on album sales alone Page runs away with it. I think far more people picked up a guitar because of Jimmy Page than because of Tony Iommi.
