the Band of Gypsies was an obligatory record made by Hendrix to fulfil his earlier contract, he never performed it with a view of it being an "official" album

"First Rays of the Rising Sun" is closer to what Jimi would've wanted, than "Cry of Love", even then i'd still nitpick over the song choices

Some of his posthumous stuff is really great. "south Saturn delta" is one that comes off the top of my head. I don't have anything against the band of gypsies, especially when mitch mitchell got back in the mix.

a lot of crap got mixed with stellar stuff on the "posthumous" releases

and poor editing as well

PPSSHHHhhhaww... just because they replaced some of the original backing tracks on the digitized 'remasters' of the Experience discs doesn't really mean anything. I mean they got the dude from The Knack to step up to the dude from The Experience, I mean really, a The- band that starts with K instead of E is like 7 notches higher up on the alphabetamowesome scale.

It was more betterer.

case in point - "The Stars That Play with Laughing Sam's Dice"

Jimi's original intended mix (the B-Side of some single) had a clear audible monologue, which is quite funny, the mix is drier

the Experience Hendrix version is a wall of fuzzy white noise and i can't make out the monologue

All I know is the Blues album is easily my favorite. Whomever did all the editing did SO well. Id take that over any studio album he put out while alive.

Ya his "blues" album is really great. There's one song I don't like, though - "mannish boy". I just don't really like what he does with it. I much prefer muddys version.

"Blues" is alright

still nothing special, as they're mostly covers or his own versions of "standards"

Why is that bad? Lots of his biggest songs back in the day were covers. Johnny B Goode, All Along, and quite a few others. His Born under a bad sign cover makes my pants wet.

i prefer his originals, except maybe for "All Along" and "Drifter's Escape", which are both slightly better than the originals

and also, i've noted before that he wasn't a very good blues player in the traditional sense
