Yet Tanner did not *make* people smile and laugh at his expense; they chose to do so. He did not offer his lyrics and his ideas as a sacrifice; he offered them to get help and suggestions. There is no reason someone should feel proud to have been exploited for fun. Most people would feel *angry*.

J., though I don't believe in souls, I do know that lyrics and songs are very personal to people, and sharing them is exposing one's inner life (aka "soul"), which takes courage. I recommend we critique gently.

You are assuming that the lyricist is the same as the character created in the song. The writer (Tanner99) may not be describing self-experience but rather observed or imagined experience. I agree if someone *really* is struggling with drug addiction and thoughts of killing her/himself, then yes, we should make that call (911) if we can.

As a response, I was going to quote something you'd said a few minutes ago about poetry being reflective of the writer, but it seems to have disappeared... as I can no longer find the post.

If so, I should clarify that in the quote I didn't meant that people necessarily write about what they personally experience, but rather they reveal what is important enough to them to write songs about. For example, I rarely write lyrics about things that happen to me, but I write about issues that are important to me. I use the fiction of lyrics to show truths I have learned or observed in my life.

This series of posts in *two* threads, no less, is my first real "bantering" on MB. Thank you.

Hi, Nick,
I agree that people can and should be honest about their feelings about someone's lyrics/poems. The way they say it, though, makes a big difference:

Destructive and hurtful (criticizes the person):
"This sucks. Everything you write I will laugh at derisively. How can you be so stupid that you don't see how stupid your lyrics are?"

vs.

Constructive and helpful (critiques the lyrics):
"I don't like the topic you are writing about because it is one that many songs deal with. I also wish the lyrics had more structure, such as meter and rhyming."
