It does seem that way. But maybe there are great contemporary poets out there somewhere. Maybe fewer people appreciate poetry these days and so poets have a harder time becoming well known. I dunno. Either way, it's a shame we have to rely on the poets of the past.

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Just read this and the way that the book visualizes the poem is intense. Explores the maddening conflict between love and a hateful world/lifestyle. Highly recommended.

It's a somewhat different experience, but you can also check out this performance of the poem.
