Point out the ones you'd like and I'll re-up them for you.

In the meantime, try this thread. http://www.musicbanter.com/soul-funk...ul-cellar.html It's a work in progress (neglected recently) but each mini review has a working link in the post/song title.

I keep meaning to add to it.
Funnily enough it entered my head just recently, after seeing a few posts around the forums referring to Northern Soul.

I'll get on with it soon.

I think Heatwave were always in the Disco Funk bracket, although I have seen them listed as Jazz Funk somewhere. I had a mate who was an absolute Northern Soul addict and I always remember her playing this-

Definitely disco funk. At least more so than Northern Soul.
Your friend may have been a Blackpool Mecca disciple...

RT How do you define Northern Soul? I was always the Funk Freak but I loved all the stuff she played. I know she used to go to Wigan before I met her. Can you post something for me to see? Thanx- I hope you will!

Northern Soul is predominantly 4/4 time and upbeat. This would be typical of the Wigan Casino 60's R&B.
Whereas Blackpool Mecca Northern Soul would have a slower tempo and included early seventies funk.
Some would argue the point I just made was a bad example, but my idea of Northern Soul lies in the former and not the latter...which makes me an oldies elitist in some peoples eyes.

Lets take your man Johnny Taylor as an example.

Here's his version of JJ Barnes' Please Let Me In.

Now compare it to the uptempo original version.

Hope this gives you a better idea of the differences within Northern Soul.

Yeh, I get the idea now. I also remember The Velvelettes " Needle In a Haystack". So this would be the upbeat 4/4 timing right? Could different genres still fit into the Northern Soul genre? When I go raiding the CD shops to find stuff I haven't got yet I always notice how much Northern Soul stuff is still out there!

Yeah, but it's all soul at the end of the day.
The difference being in the tempo, whether it's a "stomper", or a "floater".

Out of curiosity...which version did you prefer?
