Glad you asked moses.
I'll answer your second question first.
To put everything Northern Soul in one post would'nt do it any justice, in fact it would be a crime.

Northern Soul is'nt just about the music, for many people it's a way of life.
The Northern Soul scene is a means for rare soul lovers to get together, listen to this incredible music, buy and sell rare records and dance.

Wigan Casino.

It's a place, not a person moses mate.
Or rather it was. Sadly no more, Wigan Casino was demolished in the early 1980's. The Casino was a venue for Northern Soul allnighters. Without doubt the most famous Soul club in the world. Voted as no.1 venue in 1978 by America's Billboard magazine ahead of New Yorks, Studio 54. At it's peak it boasted a membership of 100,000.

This was no ordinary Soul club. No alchohol permitted and a place where the men and woman largely ignored each other, unless to talk about Soul music.
Unlike other Soul clubs at the time, like the Blackpool Mecca, Wigan Casino stuck mainly to a 60's R&B flavour, ignoring Soul with a Funk influence.

Other notable Soul clubs are (or were); The Twisted Wheel, The Torch and Shades. Today, in the absence of Wigan Casino clubs like The 100 Club and hundreds of smaller clubs around England and all over the world keep the flame burning.

Keep On, Keeping On!

Somebody ask me about rare soul vinyl.

Rare Soul vinyl is the centre of Northern Soul.
The very lifeblood.
No self respecting dj would ever consider playing anything other than original vinyl.
I know one dj who's vinyl collection is valued at around £250,000.
No surprise when you consider the prices some of these rare soul/R&B classics exchange hands for.

One of supposedly 3 copies in the world, Frank Wilson's - Do I Love You, sold for £15,000 and this year I heard it had moved again for as much as £25,000!

Many of the records are so rare they are only available on demos/promo's.

Northern Soul has always been one of those things i`m aware of but never really checked out , even though a lot of the songs you`ve mentioned are familier.

Impossible to name a top 5 list of all time as almost all Northern Soul albums consist of various artists and most of the albums are in cd format and are compilations.
These only being released during the last 15 years or so.

As most of Northern Soul material dates from the mid 60's to the early 70's.

However the better compilation cd's are;

Okeh Up North.
The Wigan Casino Story.
The Twisted Wheel Story.
The Essential Northern Soul Story.
The Golden Torch Story.

A better question Would be "What is your top 5 Northern Soul track?".

Which again would be impossible to answer but for different reasons.
Mainly because my favourites change from time to time and every now and then a song I've never heard before pops up and simply blows me away.

Top 5 Northern Soul Tracks which are currently my favourites are;

Come On Train - Don Thomas.
Just Loving You - Ruby Andrews.
Girl Across The Sreet - Moses Smith.
Our Love Is In The Pocket - JJ Barnes.
Gil Scott Heron - The Bottle.

So I've listened to a lot of your recommendations right-track. I have a few things to say

1. Billy Butler & The Enchanters sound great.
2. I like The Fall's version of There's A Ghost In My House. But, is there a lot of northern soul that sounds like R. Dean Taylor?
3. Gloria Jones' Tained Love is so much better than all the covers that followed.
4. I want to hear more from Moses Smith.
5. "The Bottle"- can't resist that beat.

Also can't wait to read your edu thread.
