Ginger Taylor's book is called the Right Track as it's his favourite record. He is a staunch Manchester United fan. He numbers a lot of the same records you do amongst his favourites. It seemed to add up.

Ho hum.

Do you DJ at all or just a collector?

uk attempts at the northern sound...

wigan's ovation - skiing in the snow (spark records)
a cover of the invitations 60s tune... wigans ovation also put an album out in '75 called northern soul dancer, and its crap lol

wayne gibson - under my thumb (pye 'disco demand' records)
pye's owner, dave macleer is supposed to like northern soul, yet in the 70s he saw it as a cash opportunity, and started his 'disco demand' label. i havent got a clue who wayne gibson is, other than hes white and has a moustache. the song "under my thumb" is originally by the rolling stones, hence its rejection by hardcore soul fans... it was just thrown onto a 'northern' beat and put out in the uk to try and cash in on the hype of northern soul. there are probably top of the pops performances on youtube, it wouldnt surprise me.

wigan's chosen few - footsee (pye "disco demand")
again, on the sellout label of 'disco demand', this tune is a random one. its fairly convincing at the start that it could be an original northern tune, but i'm fairly sure it isn't. the middle bit of it still confuses me, it stops and has airhorns and claves in the middle over a crowd cheering, and then just carries on as if it never happened... random.

can't think of any more but there are more....
Footsee and Wigan's ovation are dire records. Footsee is a pretty crappy instrumental (although did have chuck wood's 7 days too long on the flip side) and skiing in the snow done by them is cheesy at best and given that the original is available quite easily there was no excuse for this.

i can't agree regarding Wayne Gibson. The record dates back to 1966 and i love his southern drawl on it. for me it's better than the stones version and i'm a stones fan. It was reissued on disco demand rather that created for it. There is a you tube video of the original 45 on sids60s sounds channel.

I do agree that there was a lot of 1970s stuff on disco demand (tainted love by the jezebelles springs to mind) that was mass produced and best forgotten but you can't take away from them the re-issuing of great records by doris troy, jimmy radcliffe, mitch ryder, frankie and the classicals....should i go on?

I'm not a snob about NS as I do like a fair bit of the crossover stuff but definitely take your point on Ian Levine's later rubbish and the mass produced 'money spinning' rubbish that ended up on top of the pops.

Some of the snobbery and elitism within Northern Soul circles is ridiculous.
The only time I've felt any divisions within the scene were justifiable was when the 'oldies' were all played out (not true as new finds were being unearthed on a regular basis) and certain DJ's attempts at introducing more dance orientated soul tunes to the clubs that in my opinion simply didn't fit.
There are some great crossover tunes, but the kind of stuff getting plays went against what I believed to be Northern Soul. Having said that...it's all soul at the end of the day.
I'm a 60's 'oldies' man and believe that the "money spinning rubbish" dilutes a great tradition and adds nothing. In fact, if anything it's a bit of an embarrassment. The cashing in was a real shame.

Ginger Taylor has stole my soul.
Just a collector (although not so much these days as far as vinyl goes) and probably like you, the music of Northern Soul is an all consuming passion.

I'm a collector primarily but every now and again i'm asked to spin so the two boxes (soul/northern/reggae/ska) and what is affectionately known as the sh_te box go with me.

current top 5 45s (although i change my mind like the wind.....

- Steinways - You've been leading me on (Oliver records) - One of the best i've ever heard i reckon. Gonna take some whacking.

- Miracles - Going to a Go-Go (Tamla) - Awesome - just don't tire of this

-Newbeats - Run Baby Run (UK London - Hickory) - my arl fella reckons this is just pop. but what does he know eh?

- Timi Yuro - It'll never be over for me (UK Liberty) - beautiful

- Rosco Robinson - That's enough (Wand) - one of the greatest vocals on any record i've ever heard.

Your 5 current faves?

Great choices and love Roscoe Robinson.
I knew you'd hit me with a list. Just glad you only want a current top 5.
Listing an all time top 10 is as always pretty bloody impossible.

5 currently played around the house a lot in recent days are;

1. Frankie Beverley and the Butlers - 'If That's What You Wanted'
2. Anne Sexton - 'You've Been Gone Too Long'
3. The Salvadors - 'Stick By Me Baby'
4. Hank Jacobs - 'Elijah Rockin With Soul' (the one I never tire of)
5. Ruby Andrews - 'Just Lovin' You'

Love it if you'd contribute to this thread btw http://www.musicbanter.com/soul-funk...ul-cellar.html

Sorry - should've replied to this before my previous post. Love the first and the fourth but have to confess to not being too familiar with the other three. I'm pretty sure i've heard them before but couldn't have put a name to them. they've gone on my ebay search list!

Had a look at the soul cellar thread and will probably post however need to make a video/mp3 of the track in question to share as only have on the 45. **actually I can't share yet as not at 15 posts!**

P.

happy today as everton won! go fellaini
