An all-star line-up of hip-hop, R&B and soul stars has been announced for a new music festival set to be held in Auckland at the end of Labour Weekend.

The festival, called Soulfest, will take place at Auckland's Western Springs on Sunday, October 26 and will feature Maxwell, D'Angelo, Common, Mos Def, Anthony Hamilton, Angie Stone and Musiq Soulchild.

More artists will be added to the bill, including New Zealand acts, a press release issued this morning said.

The event will be run over 10 hours in "a specially configured area" within the bottom speedway area of Western Springs Stadium.

The festival - which promises "a unique opportunity to see and hear some of the world's finest artists in a cool, relaxed and friendly atmosphere - is being held in Australia for the first time this year, with three dates in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.


It also aims to provide "an expansive array of great soul food, and an excellent selection of wines, beers, spirits, great coffee and non-alcoholic options".

Pre-sale tickets are available from June 3, with tickets going on full reelase on June 5. Prices range from $99 for earlybird tickets, to $299 for the full VIP package.

t's been so long, with so many false alarms, you start to lose track. D'Angelo's long-awaited follow-up to his classic 2000 album "Voodoo" was supposed to come out in 2007. Then 2009. Then 2010. Then he started touring, for the first time in 10 years, in 2011 and into 2012, airing four solid new songs: "Ain't That Easy," "The Charade," "In Another Life," and "Sugar Daddy."

Last year, he played some shows as a duo with longtime friend and collaborator ?uestlove as "Brothers in Arms." He performed the electrifying encore at Michael Dorf's "Music of Prince" tribute at Carnegie Hall, along with ?uestlove and members of the Roots and the Revolution, around the same time. He turned up at Bonnaroo last weekend, playing covers. He even gave an underwhelming 75-minute-long talk, moderated by veteran journalist (and Billboard alum) Nelson George, last month at the Brooklyn Museum as part of the Red Bull Music Academy, which provided some entertaining anecdotes but not much in the way of actual news. The album was clearly a taboo topic: ?uestlove, called onstage to join in the talk a couple of times, was the only one who dared to bring it up, and the chat ended immediately afterward.

Yet D'Angelo's manager, Kevin Liles of KWL Management and a longtime label and branding exec, told Billboard last week that the wait for the world's most long-awaited album apart from Dr. Dre's "Detox" is almost over. Now, that's nothing we haven't heard before: ?uestlove said in December of 2011 that the album was "pretty much 97 percent done," and in January of 2013, he told Billboard that it was "99 percent done."

In March of 2013, Liles told Billboard, "We're trying to finish the album. Right now we have 13 songs done, trying to think about the sequence of the album, mastering and mixing within the next two weeks, and release the thing. Ain't no question it's coming."

Judging by that tectonic pace, the album actually should be just about approximately almost 100 percent done right about now. Here's what Liles said:

"Here's the thing: with D'Angelo it was a process. He didn't perform for 10 years and he's been working on an album for the past 12 years. I actually got him to go out and do 30 shows [in 2011-2012], and then we did some 'Brothers in Arms' shows. I said, 'We have to get motivated around what people want to hear from you, and what does it mean to come back to that space?' He very bluntly put it, 'Kev, the studio and the stage: that's my lifeblood. Now that I've touched it again, now that I see it again, I wanna be sure that the baby I'm about to have -- the album -- that I take it to the point where it's all it can be.'

D'Angelo Added to James B...ute Lineup

"There'll be an album this year: there's 14 records so far, we might have a couple of bonus records, but all the recording is basically done and we're mixing and mastering now. Definitely, he'll be back.

"We'll probably start an international tour in October, we'll come back [to the States]. We're doing a James Brown tribute in August [at the Hollywood Bowl] and some one-off things. But the touring will probably start in October and 2015."

Billboard: What's the album like?

Liles: "To limit it to soul is not the case, because there is a rock influence. But at the same time, it's very melodic and there's an influence of all the things he loves: there's James Brown, there's Prince, and everything people grew up loving D'Angelo for, from 'Brown Sugar' to 'Voodoo.' It's a mixture and an evolution of where he is right now. And you have to think that when you have the opportunity to work 10 years on an album, that album's truly gonna be what you want it to be. Is it limited to the kind of sound that he did with the earlier records? No, it's not."

BB: Does it have a name yet?

KL: "There is a potential name, but I don't wanna give you a potential name and then change it."

BB: And it's definitely coming in 2014?

Simply put, D' got skilzz. He just needs to return to his "musical base" he established back when & RE-build from there.....

He's got the "foundation" (tho' it may have been buried by an emotionally deep "rock-slide"). Jus' gotta "dig" himself out....

Over the summer, D’Angelo’s manager, Kevin Liles, made two rather sizable promises: 1) the reclusive R&B singer would release his long-awaited follow-up to 2000’s Voodoo by year’s end, and 2) he would tour behind the record in early 2015.

Barring any Beyoncé/U2-style surprise release, it appears the world will go another year without a new D’Angelo LP. However, Liles’ other promise has come at least partially true, as D’Angelo has announced a new round of international dates. Slated for mid-February through early March, the 13-date “Second Coming Tour” centers mostly around shows in Germany, with additional dates scheduled in the UK, Sweden, and Switzerland.

According to a press release, the shows will see D’Angelo and his band The Vanguard “combine many popular hits with new songs and fresh interpretations of covers.”

D Angelo is not the "super star" type and he has always been that way. He is shy, private and doesn't really like being in the spotlight. He has had a lot of drug problems over the years so I am happy he is trying to get his life together. However, I am not sure what is holding him back from releasing the new album! He has a ton of new material that he performs live so he has enough to make an album.

I am still going to have faith though. Its been 15 years since his last album...he needs to release something and stop playing games!!!!!!

The easiest tone to take withBlack Messiah, in its entire majestic roar, is that it's an album rooted in the black experience -- of struggle, survival and love.

For an album that leads with a Brown Sugar sliding weed metaphor and closes with reflection, plucking memorable lyrical mementos from D'Angelo & The Vanguard's latest is therapy. Expect any of these verses from D'Angelo and co-writer Kendra Foster to wind up as late night texts that are blind to consequence and discovery.
Below are the 10 best lyrics from Black Messiah.
10. "Another Life" (Verse 1)
Fully convinced he's ready to walk back into love, D’Angelo quips in the opening line, "How does one attempt to be, the kind of friend you would want to keep?" One first date may start the cycle all over again, but this time D'Angelo's ready to breathe, and enjoy himself.
9. "The Door" (Verse 1)
The folk whistle and guitar licks of "The Door" show out heavily here, detraction from the severity of the song's message, a break up. "Don’' lock yourself out that door" echoes throughout but the opening stanza feels like a set up for a list of pros and cons resulting in the end.
8. "Betray My Heart" (Verse 2)
"Betray My Heart" find D'Angelo speaking on self-love, an aspect that Black Messiah approaches in terms of a whole body deciding to make itself singular. He’s no longer about to backtrack and apprehend himself: "You, my soul can depend on me."
7. "Prayer" (Verse 2)
"Prayer" may be the most straight-lined moment on Black Messiah. It's gospel to the bone, asking for deliverance. D'Angelo understood the bleakness of the world on "Till It's Done." Now he just wants to be free of it: "Keep me away from temptation, deliver us from evil."
6. "Til' It's Done (Tutu)" (Verse 1)
Most have wanted to declare Black Messiah a closer relative to Voodoo thanBrown Sugar. "Til' It's Done (Tutu)" fits somewhere in a different area, the angered place where "1000 Deaths" roared but more folksy, questioning it all until we leave. Key line here: "tragedy flows unbound and there’s no place to run, 'till it's done."
5. "Back To The Future" (Verse 2)
On the surface, "Back To The Future" is a send-up The Roots & J Dilla's "Dynamite" from 1996's Things Fall Apart. A Soulquarian to the bone, D'Angelo leads The Vanguard right down the same road, kicking up his Richmond, VA roots and even jokes about certain fans caring more about him physical shape than his mental one.
4. "Really Love" (Verse 2)
Love is all about the art of letting go. It’s about understanding your own faults and edges and wanting them to be smoothed out by someone who gets them. "I’m not an easy man, to overstand, but girl you’re patient with me," is where D’Angelo lands on "Really Love," a simple love song almost ripped from the book of Stevie Wonder.
3. "The Charade" (Verse 1)
"Crawling through a systematic maze to demise, pain in our eyes... wading through the lies," are fifteen of the first eighteen words of "The Charade." You're supposed to clap, sway and dance to "The Charade" because it feels breezy and free. There's pain here, a stated sense of being fed up watching wool being tossed over our eyes.
2. "1000 Deaths" (Verse 3)
"1000 Deaths" screams through pumped bass about recognition. Malcolm X’s opening speech dictating the track’s every move. It’s third verse, packed with prayer to God for strength ("he don’t want no coward soldier") and given purpose ("I was born to kill"), the wails of awareness about life.
1. "Ain't That Right" (Verse 2)
Confidence is something D'Angelo never lacked, even when he knows you can’t let him go. The opening chords of the winter's warmest ounce of soul music start in anger and swell with him playing oracle. "I offer you the truth, you need the comfort of my lovin' to bring out the best in you."
