forgive me if these names are already in the thread, but i also wanted to add Ann Peebles and William Bell to the list.

I listen to funk and soul but I've never heard of those names, whoa--and I thought that I knew funk/soul music---I am now shamed. I'm gonna have to check them out.

Oh, please do. William Bell was an early Stax/Volt artist -- my favorite of his songs (which is his best known) is "You Don't Miss Your Water". Ann Peebles is best known for "I Can't Stand the Rain," but she has many other amazing songs--some of the best stuff to come out of Willie Mitchell's Hi Records (Al Green's label). This is also where O.V. Wright recorded most of his work. There's a lot of amazing soul out there---and i'd say Stax and Hi are the best places to start.

Okeh, featuring artists like Major Lance and Billy Butler.

Okay, I remeber those songs -yeah. Have you ever seen the documentary WattsStax--I think it's called...it's a cool documentary--it's commentary from artists, Richard Pryor and random people --and the backdrop is a funk/soul concert--it's pretty cool

No, I haven't seen that documentary -- but I think I've heard about it. A concert in the Watts section of Los Angeles? I'll definitely have to watch it soon.

I definitely agree with you the music from the mid 50's to the mid 70's is the greatest "Sam Cooke" is my all time favorite vocalist very smooth and mellow. The bands from the 70's can't be beat.
