Russia are a solid all around team they have great world-class calibre players in almost every position.

Igor Akinfeev may be one of the best shot stoppers in the planet, but is still not guaranteed a place in the starting line up.

Sergei Ignashevich is a solid centre half who plays a similar style to Man.Utd's Nemanja Vidic. He'll be a stalwart at the back for them along with Yuri Zhirkov, the only other defender of note whom I'm sure many of you are acquainted with.

At only 22 years old, Alan Dzagoev has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City, although I have seen very little of what this guy can do, I've heard the stories and they're frightening. He'll be the one to watch.

Russia have the most to offer in the striking department with Andrei Arshavin, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Pavel Pogrebnyak and Alexander Kerzhakov who are all capable and proven goalscorers with Arshavin likely to assume a wider position with Kerzhakov and Pogrebnyak through the middle.

Russia as a whole play a fluid brand of passing football, there are no egos in the team and each player works as part of a unit, unlike countries such as England & France and they have a steady hand in Dick Advocaat as their coach.

Their group consists of Czech Republic, Poland and Greece, none of whom will exactly give the Russians much to worry about, especially after they whupped Italy 3-0 last night.

Remember you heard Mankycaaant call it first: Russia, Euro 2012 champions

@ Soldier - Puyol is not a big miss. Pique and Ramos are, when on form, far superior central defenders. Villa is a big miss, but Spain still have better strikers than anyone else in the tournament.
But Sergio Ramos is not great as a CB as he lacks concentration when it matters, he's a far better FB. Apart from Torres Spain don't have any great strikers for Euro 2012, they'll have to hope the goals come from elsewhere.

Agree with Mankycaaaant that Russia may well have the best pool of players available in most positions, they almost have home advantage as well. I don't think they will win though, but if they got to the semis again I may well reconsider. Personally I love watching the Russians player, with their slick and classy Eastern European style of playing.

Parker impressed me today.
I have a theory he would have been an England regular for years had he not gone to Chelsea when he did.

Ramos is a world class center back, far better than both Pique and Puyol. Parker is an average player who should be nowhere near the First XI if everyone were fit.

So why is Del Bosque concerned about playing him at CB? I'd actually say Parker was one of the better England players.

Jose Mourinho plays him at Center Back whenever he is fit, and the guy puts in 9/10 performances week after week. He is absolutely outstanding in that position. Maybe not a year or two back, but right now he is World Class.

Parker is a completely average all-round player, who is very good at tackling and blocking. That's not enough in modern football. Parker has nothing on the likes of Carrick, Wilshere, Lampard, Barry and Gerrard because all of those can do what he does (maybe to a lesser standard) but have so much more to their game.

A rich man's Lee Cattermole at best.

Ok we'll see how he does there for Spain, the type of blocking and tackling player that Parker is, is kind of essential and as you say yourself he's the best that England have, so it makes sense that he should be in the squad.

Just read that Cahill is not out of squad, it just gets better and better

I'm still struggling to comprehend why Henderson was called up by Hodgy Beats to replace Lampard.
Why wasn't carrick called?

And from this source, it would indicate that Cahill's missing out with a broken jaw. Martin Kelly's his replacement.

CBBC Newsround - Gary Cahill has been ruled out of the Euros

Martin Kelly being selected over Rio is even more perplexing.
Perhaps not if one were to consider the Terry/Anton fiasco.
