bagpipes can sound good in some rock songs like dropkick murphys song or flogging molly songs but idk about just listening to them alone

Does anyone want to comment on this often-maligned instrument?
Any favourite tracks, unexpected appearances or really bad examples of bagpipes?
Many of us can name a favourite guitar solo, who can name a similar bagpipe solo?
The instumental bagpipe bit at the end of The Dreaming never fails to give me goosebumps.

This thread made me think of the extended version of “Sky Pilot” by the Animals, a great song that I haven’t thought of in a very long time. There’s a pretty cool bagpipe/sounds of battle segment right in the middle followed by a sweet violin section. Good stuff.

^ That track is a surprise, and I love the short call-and-response bit between the guitar and the bagpipes.

^ Ditto, haven't thought of this album -or track- for years. In fact I forgot that there was a bit of bagpipe in it. Good call. Of course the bagpipes are traditionally associated with battle, either leading the poor troops in or mourning their subsequent death. Here's a battle track by Joe Strummer, so turn it up loud, get a handkerchief out and let this one really kick your ass:-

It's ok grammatically, but I never thought I'd use the expression "jazzy bagpipe noodling" so thanks for grindy's rec demonstrating that such a thing exists.

On a more sedate note, Ommadawn has a section in which the bagpipes are the lead instrument. Two mins in, the bagpipes really bring this part of the album to life:-

Never been a fan of bagpipes, but recently the swedish free jazz saxophonist Mats Gustafsson put out an album with french (I think?) bagpipe player Erwan Keravec under the name of Luft (swedish for "air"). Their 2018 album Inhale was actually quite something, and probably the first time I really liked a bagpipe music. Couldn't find an album track on Youtube, but there are some live clips apparently: (haven't watched them myself, but you probably get the idea...) Free jazz duo of sax/bagpipes.

Erwan Keravec has also put out some solo albums of avant-garde piping, of which I've heard some, but they didn't really stick...
