On the topic, I'd say it depends on the kind of spell, is it a spell that merely makes him like tennis or does it force him into it?

I think the more important question is why a wizard waste his powers to turn some nobody into a tennis fan.

I think the point is that we're all affected by spells like this. Sorry if that sounds like we're running a game of Dungeons & Dragons.

At the most basic, we like sex, we like to eat sugary and fatty foods etc. At a higher level, society is full of suggestion, for example what brand of shampoo you should get. Like Thomas, we're mostly oblivious to these influences, yet they guide us every day.

nice...

as for my own views on the premise. yes the individual still has free will, based on the description the spell simply makes him 'like' tennis, the individual is still the one who chooses (freely) to obsess over it.

He has free will, but he isn't the same person as he was before the spell was cast. In this case the spell is pretty similar to any regular set of influences, but the cause and effect is slightly messed up.
