Pentagram.

Now, I'm sure everyone knows them. Thats not why they're underrated in my opinion. Look at it like this though, the band was formed in 1971, released demos from 72-79 all of witch were metal releases so to speak. When people talk about starting metal bands, Pentagram is rarely mentioned even though they were around very early in the scene. So not that Pentagram is unknown, just not given enough credit.

Keane are possibly the most underrated band ever.

Indeed, it was "Generals and Majors" that did it for me. You could really play any XTC song and hook someone, they are ridiculously catchy.

I have to agree with the the notion that XTC are underrated.... they definitely have some incredibly awesome music, but in the wider community at large, they are definitely not as well known as they should be!

Maybe because there isn't much to rate in the first place.

Definitely a band that has been overshadowed in the world of dreampop/shoegaze, yet they're legends all the same.
