Just listened to both of them for the first time this morning, The Real Thing really stood out for me. Glad these two were the choices, I've been meaning to listen to them for awhile now.

Going to agree with Urban about hair-metal popularity circa 88/89. The early 90's completely killed whatever mainstream interest was left in the genre, but by the time I was born it was probably near-impossible for a new hair-metal/AOR band to hit it big in light of changing tastes and the newfound commercial viability of bands/styles that were previously considered "underground" for one reason or another.

That being said, I feel that some AOR bands got unfairly slighted as a result of that changing commercial playing field even though their music was pretty damn good (such as Strangeways). Then again, I'm in the minority, so yeah...

I thought that Motley Crue vindicated themselves musically going into the '90s when they released Dr. Feelgood in late '89, the first album Mötley Crüe had recorded after their quest for sobriety and rehabilitation. Who would've ever guessed that grunge was just around the corner.

The Real Thing fades for me after its first half, while Nothing's Shocking stays consistently good. Plus, 'Mountain Song' is the best thing on either album. Angel Dust kicks the crap out of anything either band did though...

Given that I think these are two of the best albums ever recorded its an almost impossible choice, I have to go with the Cars though.

An interesting footnote about the Devo album comes from Brain Eno who produced it. After finishing the album, Devo wanted to dump nearly all the recorded material and replace with their earlier inaccessible material.....luckily the record company listened to Eno. Eno also described Devo, as the most braindead and stubborn band he`d ever worked with and swore he`d never work with them again!
