Default Your Top 5 Songs About Loss

The day's events inspired this thread. Don't let it die.

Mine:

Glycerine - Bush: Heard this song on the radio today for the first time in ages & it made me cry, again. Beautiful song, raw, speaks to a variety of situations. Personal meaning. YouTube - Bush - Glycerine

Fire and Rain - James Taylor: Always been one of my faves. You might leave angry, or forget to call, or just not be able to be there at the time that's needed. Sometimes there aren't second chances. YouTube - James Taylor - "Fire & Rain"

You Can't Always Get What You Want - Stones: "Immediate disqualification because of it's involvement with the Big Chill," Berry said one morning at Championship Vinyl. It should be immediate DQ, but it's in that film for a reason; and it speaks in beautiful poetry about losing someone, or something. And the music is gorgeous. It tried so hard in vain to be optimistic about the situation ahand, but you get it. YouTube - Rolling Stones - You can't always get what you want

Bell Bottom Blues - Derek and the Dominos: Self-spoken. Personal meaning. YouTube - Bell Bottom Blues - Derek and the Dominos

Flower in the Sun - Janis Joplin: Raw, honest, beautiful. Also self-spoken. YouTube - Janis Joplin - Flower in the sun

Backstreets: Bruce Springsteen- Friendship, possibly love, and loss. YouTube - Bruce Springsteen: BACKSTREETS

Idiot Wind: Bob Dylan- "You'll never know the hurt I suffered/Nor the pain I rise above/And I'll never know the same about you/Your holiness, your kind of love/And it makes me feel so sorry." Just about sums it up. Not the best video of the song, but I wanted one of the 1992 performances because they really bring out the loss in the song: YouTube - Bob Dylan - Genova 1992 - Idiot Wind

Out There In The Night- The Only Ones- A bit lighter, but the simplicity really works for this one. "Sometimes I think of you/Out there in the night/You ain't here with me/And nothing seems right."

(Remember) Walkin' In The Sand- The Shangri-La's- Lost love, lost innocence...either way, it's a killer track. Runner up: Past, Present, & Future. YouTube - Shangri-Las - Remember (Walkin' In the Sand)

The Who- Tea & Theatre- Even though this really should be credited "Townshend/Daltrey," this is an amazing track. It's really more about aging, but there's definitely some loss there:

Lean on my shoulder now
This story is done
It's getting colder now
A thousand songs
Still smoulder now
We play them as one
We're older now
All of us sad
All of us free
Before we walk from this stage
Two of us

Will you have some tea
Will you have some tea
At the theatre with me?

Honorable mention: Lou Reed, Magic & Loss. "There's a bit of magic in everything and then some loss to even things out."

For No One-The Beatles
Your day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all her words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you

She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn't
feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

Racing Like a Pro-The National
Your mind is racing like a pro, now
oh my god it doesn’t mean a lot to you
one time you were a glowing young ruffian
oh my god it was a million years ago

Girl From North Country-Bob Dylan
Well, if you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm,
When the rivers freeze and summer ends,
Please see if she's wearing a coat so warm,
To keep her from the howlin' winds.

Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
If it rolls and flows all down her breast.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
That's the way I remember her best.

Have You Forgotten-Red House Panters
Have you forgotten how to love yourself? [x2]

I can't believe all the good things that you do for me
sat back in a chair like a princess from a faraway place
nobody's nice, when you're older your heart turns to ice
and shut out what they say;
they're too dumb to mean it anyway

When we were kids, we hated things our sisters did
backyard summer pools and Christmases were beautiful
and the sentiment of coloured mirrored ornaments
and the open drapes
look out on frozen farmhouse landscapes

Have you forgotten how to love yourself? [x6]

Blindsided-Bon Iver:
Bike down... down to the downtown
Down to the lockdown... boards, nails lye arond

I crouch like a crow
Contrasting the snow
For the agony, I'd rather know
'Cause blinded I am blindsided

Peek in... into the peer in
I'm not really like this... I'm probably plightless

I cup the window
I'm crippled and slow
For the agony
I'd rather know
'Cause blinded I am blindsided

Would you really rush out for me now?

Taught line... down to trhe shoreline
The end of a blood line... the moon is a cold light

There's a pull to the flow
My feet melt the snow
For the irony, i'd rather know
'Cause blinded I was blindsided

'Cause blinded I was blindsided

'Cause blinded I was blindsided

Love the Bruce & the Bob. Wish I'd thought of those. Beautiful list. Kudos.

Fade to Black:BY Metallica. This song was written after all the bands' equipment got stolen in 1984. Not a very emotional loss, because those material things could be replaced, unlike the passing of a loved one or close friend. But still technically a song about a loss, so mch to the point to where the lyrics say:

I have lost the will to live;
simply nothing more to give;

almost implying suicidal thoughts(In my opinion)

To Live Is To Die: By Metallica. The entire solo was dedicated to former bass player Cliff Burton. You can really feel the emotion in this one.

And those are the only 2 songs that come to mind at the moment, I had more when I started typing, but I forgot as I went on.

I like both of these songs equally, I dont like Fade To Black more than TLITD, as a matter of fact, i dont even really like the song that much. I just put it there because thats all I could think of.

GREAT list. Love the old stuff. Old stuff just seems more genuine to me, more raw, honest. And we now have TWO songs from the Big Chill haha. Can't Always Get What You Want (from my original list) and Heard it Through the Grapevine. Nice . And with only 23 posts! You're going places

"Sweetness Follows"—REM: You don't get more "about loss" than a song talking about burying your parents. The organ, the cello, and the vocals all come together to make me think of every funeral I've ever been to and that wrung-out feeling that comes with them.

"My Father's House"—Bruce Springsteen: Minimal instrumentation and reverb-drenched vocals highlight the lonesome, regret-filled lyrics of this song about a falling out between a father and son. There's something very universal about what's expressed in this song, the fear of removing yourself so far from your family that you completely lose them, and I think that's what has made this one of the more well-known songs on the album it comes from.

"You're Missing"—Bruce Springsteen: A song about all the little things left behind when a loved one is gone. Released in the wake of 9/11, this song really has a special resonance for me and chokes me up every time I hear it. I am definitely not the world's biggest Springsteen fan but there's a reason he makes this list twice: he's damn good at writing this kind of song.

"The Warming Sun"—Grandaddy: Lyrics dreaming of an alternate life where a break-up never happened and comparing it to reality where the singer's lover ended up with a guy he realizes is a much better person than him. The lyrics are so self-deprecating, sung with such an innocence and set against such a dynamic song structure that it pulls me in ever time.

"Blind"—TV on the Radio: Lyrics about seeing a lost love in the faces of strangers on the sidewalk sung mournfully over music evocative of a crumbling city skyline. This song feels like a vast hollow space in my chest every time I hear it.
