Default Best Effort Yet

'Get Behind Me Satan' is easily the best White Stripes album to date. It somewhat suprises me that fans are not satisfied. That the songs lack guitar driving them along shouldn't be considered a negative aspect. These songs are driven by Jack's vocals, giving it a more personal feel. Lyrically, Jack gives a commendable effort. His alliteration and rhyming in phrases is 'rap-like' at times, adding to the Jack's coninued focus on beat and rhythm (listen to the way the last 'then there is a SIN-NER TOO' is belted out smack dab on time along with Meg's drums in a heart racing crescendo). I must admit that the constant word play and other literary devices distracts from lyrical meaning at times. However, Jack is still relatively young and I believe his writing will continue to improve. The point of the album still comes accross to me, but it seems it has escaped most people (I have yet to read a review mentioning this) -- The album is about his non-existent love life, folks. And Jack is depressed. Love is an apparition to him - a "Little ghost". He wants love so bad he just keeps on thinking about the doorbell ringing. But it doesn't. He knows he seems ugly to people. What can he do? I'll admit the 'Meg the sister/brother/lover' thing is strange, but interesting as well. We know he certainly loves his Mother and the rest of his family, but, incest? "I aint that lonely yet' he tells us. Yet? Whew. Never for me. But Yet means there is a chance it could get to that point. Or does it? His sister just might be Meg. Regardless, this album certainly proves that Jack is indeed an artist. Not quite Bob Dylan, but people don't want that nowadays, anyhow. I'm quite content with the direction he's going ... so long he doesn't get to my sis.

I was very disappointed with this album. De Stijl still owns everything they've ever done.

nah its fine, Jack White is sorta all over the place (as it should be), I think the man is one of a small few holding up the entire burgeoning rock scene.

Isn't Jack involved in a side project of some sorts? If so where could I hear it?
