Honestly, I think "The Start of Something Beautiful" is just as good, if not better, than "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here", and they're off of the same album.

"Blackest Eyes" and "Even Less" are excellent old stand-bys.

I think the live album Warszawa is a good second or first step for somebody looking to get more into their repertoire. There's nothing on there as new as Deadwing, but it was all recorded live, one take, on national public radio in Poland, and it sounds like a studio album. Great stuff.

These are probably my three favourite PT songs, nice picks!

Arriving Somewhere is the first PT song I heard and despite an overall evaluation of the band I have to say that it is a damn fine song and something that captures my tastes so well.

I often feel On The Sunday Of Life isnt given enough credit. Considering he wrote it all himself and played I believe every instrument and sound effect for the final recording.

Truly a psychedelic journey of an album.

Hi, I read all thread so now I can tell some thoughts of new Porcupine Tree fan.
I have all discography and I listen to them 3 months. At first I got two albums of Blackfield from one girl and I liked it. So I wanted to know more... I was like "wow" when I found how many projects and music styles S. Wilson is able to do. That's really attractive for me and one of the main reasons why I like this man. Although I still love Blackfield, now Porcupine Tree is of course better for me. It quickly became my second favourite band.
I like also I.E.M. and someday (I hope soon) I am going to try music of No man.
Somebody here wrote that the main problem of Porcupine Tree is that they are hard to categorize. For me it's the why I started to love them - they are something what I needed but didn't know about it.

Hehe.
I don't understand why so many people still want something new, original and everything what has some inspiration from other bands is bad. I don't think. And I don't care so much because I don't need to compare. I love some band or don't like - for me it's just my feeling and I don't need to have reasons... I don't say they are perfect but I love Porcupine Tree just because what they are.

I bought it and I really like it. Well, I love especially sound so I have it like mp3.
About their look... I read some reviews that they are cold band on stage. Don't know, I have never seen them live.
Some fans of progressive rock don't like PT because they are electronic and hmm... for somebody without emotions....

Haha, it's funny - these two bands are the best advertisements for each other I guess lot of us know both bands because it is something like "must" if you like S. Wilson or M. Akerfeldt

I have the same reaction to Steven Wilsons' Insurgentes album... don't know what it is but I can't seem to be bothered listening to it from start to finish like In Absentia or Deadwing.
I love The Incident and I love Insurgentes. Yes, it is different and maybe fans didn't expect it and it's the reason why they don't like it. But for me all PT albums were new so I listened them without some expectations.
On the other hand I have a feeling they are two groups of people - you love The Incident or you hate it, almost nothing between.
(By the way and little bit off-topic I read the same comments about album Octavarium by Dream Theater. The best or the worst album...)

My number one is Deadwing and number two is In Absentia. Third place is for The Incident. It's easy to love Deadwing and In Absentia - they are more accesibble and you can love them after first listening. But it doesn't work for The Incident and Insurgentes. These albums needs more time, more concentration. It took me also longer time but now these albums give me a lot of feelings.

I am really happy I found Porcupine Tree!

Oh, you are lucky!
I can't expect my country, lot of great bands don't come to Czech Republic. They tour almost all Europe but not CZ. (Are we really country full of pop?) I should move to Germany or Poland

Hey, I've listened to The Incident heaps now and I'm on the same ship as everyone else. I love it. But now my favourite album/s have changed. Either Deadwing for me or FOABP... I love Stupid Dream and Up The Downstair too. Actually Up The Downstair might take number one position for me soon...

As for Octavarium, it is a great album that is very varied, a good starter for beginners. Though it has an epic close many fans are turned off by the overly poppy sound of some tracks. Okay...
Back on topic...

I'm sorry for being off-topic, I won't be more.

Now I often shuffle Porcupine Tree songs in my player and I realized they have lot of great tracks in all albums. Some of them are underrated (in my opinion) because they aren't part of these "famous" albums like FOABP, Deadwing or In Absentia.
I like a lot also Stupid Dream and than Lightbulb Sun. Also Starts Die and Recordings are nice albums. To be honest I don't have some PT album which would be bad for me.
I think it's nice when favourite albums change from time to time
Songs like Buying new soul, Orchidia, Futile, Cure for optimism, Drown with me, Stranger by the minute are for me better than some more played songs on Last.fm.
Only one song I really don't like - Jupiter Island.
