Well, there's a few NYC-based bands that I would recommend.

Behold... the Arctopus
Dysrhythmia
Orthrelm

I'm not sure how often they play around the city, but they're definitely worth seeing.

In all seriousness, I'd recommend checking out the music listings in the Village Voice or the NYC edition of the Onion. Both are free and if you start reading them every week you'll being to get a sense of where to find the kinds of music that interest you.
