Progressive Metal / Dream Theater

Well I dont know how many people around here like progressive metal, but I do. There are 2 bands that I like in the genre: Dream Theater and Symphony X. Anyway, if anyone else here is interested, we could discuss these bands or the genre itself in general. And if you know about other bands in the genre that you like, feel free to mention them and we could discuss them too maybe.

FOr those of you who have no idea what progressive metal is like, heres a good song of this genre. Feel free to check it out.

Also I made a poll about if you like the genre or not. Feel free to vote too.

I like DT and have listened to them for many years. You should also check out Anubis Gate, Circus Maximus, Chaos Divine, Evergrey, Darkwater and Enochian Theory just to name a few other bands. PM is my second favorite genre next to symphonic metal.

Thanks very much for the bands, I'll check them out sometime.

What is your favorite Dream Theater album??

Pretty sure there is a topic for prog metal but I'll comment on DT. I used to love them a while ago but not so much now. There are more interesting bands that don't so much let technicality overshadow their ability to tell stories or concepts. They do have musical prowess and skilled musicians but can get quite boring and tedious. I do like Images and Words and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.

I've always been bored to tears with DT. I did however like the keyboardist Jordan playing solo stuff on keys at the NAMM show a few years back. Thats not to say there isn't obvious talent its just too wanky for me.

I like all their first 6 albums, from 1989 to 2003. From the album Octavarium onwards their music became kinda boring in my opinion.

But in terms of a single favorite album....When Dream and Day Unite. Absolutely.

Images and Words & Awake are my two favorite DT albums. I'm quite fond of Falling into Infinity as well but their sound has changed and I'm not feeling the love as of late. There are several bands that have a feel similar to the early DT stuff and I like them.
