I like Chris Cornell a lot and he is a very talented singer. Not so good live in my opinion. I guess they said Layne wasn't as good live in his later years, either, due to all the drugs.
On Bush, I do like them. Sixteen Stone has some great songs that are an integral part of the mid-'90s. But by the time The Science of Things rolled around, it was Bush overload on the radio IMO. If I had to hear "The Chemicals Between Us" one more time...maybe it's not so bad now, but it was getting overplayed at the time, which was nauseating. I was excited when Sea of Memories was announced, but I gave that album a spin, and it's not very good at all.
By Silverchair being grunge, I'm mainly thinking of Frogstomp and maybe a few songs off Neon Ballroom, the latter of which I've not spun in a long time. In going back and listening to Frogstomp, I had forgotten how heavy their earlier sound was. They changed their sound drastically later on as they went "weak sauce" with things, so you wouldn't be missing anything in not looking into it.
Chris Cornell had his bad days. The best of them do. So I can't say that Chris Cornell isn't good live. Some people just have sort of unrealistic expectations of singers in bands when they see the band live. You will hear any imperfection in their voice because there's no studio to hide them. It's too bad I never got to seem them back in the 90's when his voice was in better condition.
I was celebrating as well when Bush announced The Sea Of Memories. Afterlife was the first taste or indication of what the album would sound like. I wasn't big on the song at first but it grew on me. Sound Of Winter was what really got me excited. It sounded like the Bush from Sixteen Stone, or close enough. The album as a whole wasn't solid, I liked each song but in the mix of songs, there were songs that I didn't understand making the album. I want to say that The Heart Of The Matter and Be Still My Love were my two favorite tracks from the album, Sound Of Winter too of course. Mirror Of The Signs is a good one, and for some reason She's A Stallion resonated with me too.
I've never considered myself a Pearl Jam fan; in fact, Vedder's voice never seemed spectacular to me until I heard his cover of Nick Cave's "The Ship Song." It was painfully beautiful, so I voted Vedder
Thanks, whoever brought up Sixteen Stone. I'll always have positive associations with that album due to a two-month long bender I had with that one, during my college days... During that bender, I also won a **** pot of consecutive Texas Holdem tournaments as well as cash games. Coincidence???? You decide
As far as "new grunge" is concerned, I'm not aware of any new purist grunge? (Take that with a grain of salt, of course, since I suck at genres!)...However, Dean Roland (of Collective Soul) currently has an amazing side project called Magnets & Ghosts, and you can definitely hear his grunge history seeping out of each track... I'll post a couple songs because it really takes me to a happy place <--hence the generic emoticon...

I've heard of I Was Afraid. They're quite good. I think if they had more recognition, they could help bring "grungegaze" into a bigger spotlight in the indie community.

I Was Afraid have their moments definitely. I kinda prefer them over Hum, not that I don't like Hum but most of their stuff just bores me too much. Might grow on me though.
I feel like grungy shoegaze would be something my local college station will start playin more often at some point or another.
Did you listen to the other two? Senium is a great band.

I just got this message. I totally get where you're going with Senium. Quite Nirvana-ish. Of course, Steve ALbini's production with grunge shouldn't make that a surprise. A little more post-grungish than Nirvana, but still cool. It's a shame good ands like this go unnoticed. I enjoy them more than live Nirvana. Still haven't tried Noiseheads yet. It's cool Senium. got Albini to notice them.
