Default Is Classic Rock considered a genre?

Many people now separate Rock and Roll and Rock music. Some people will say Classic Rock is really the roots of Modern Rock. Do you think it's a separate genre that covers everything from British Invasion to Progressive Rock?

It's important to remember that a lot of people use each thread. You're probably not as funny or clever as you think, I know I'm not.

No. It's a broad term used to describe just about any kind of mainstream rock music from the late 60s and 70s. Classic rock is more of an era than a genre.

Anyone from Jethro Tull to Steely Dan can be considered classic rock, a lot of so called classic rock bands have absolutely nothing in common.

I consider it one of the many sub-genres of Rock. In general, I would just categorize Classic Rock, Metal, Punk, Emo, Goth, Progressive, and all the rest under Rock.

It's not a genre, but I do use it as a term for genres like glam rock and southern rock to fall into.

Very often prog and metal bands fall into the classic rock category too.

I consider very few Metal bands to be Classic Rock. Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult would definately be 2 Classic Rock metal bands, but Metallica and Judas Priest don't fit in with the whole classic rock category.

Judas Priest certainly fits into the generally accepted classic rock category, Metallica obviously doesn't since it was formed in the 80's.

Basically for me Classic Rock is defined as the straighforward/hard/heavy rock bands, from the Allman Brothers to Zeppelin. However I don't consider prog rock bands to fall into the classic rock category, borderline or mainstream prog like WA and Pink Floyd however do.

Classic rock is a genre, it's a category for music therefore a genre. I know what you mean though, it doesn't signify anything specific stylistically or musically, just an era of early album oriented rock music.
