I don't think it's accurate to say that 'true' liberals are fundamentally for big government (think anarchists) or that 'true' conservatives are fundamentally for small government (think fascists)....

Yeah, I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that artists for obvious reasons tend to favor free expression, something that is often at odds with conservative values.
