The sub-genres can get pretty ridiculous but some of them are legit and work as helpful descriptions of the music. Bebop and Dixieland are two really different types of jazz for example.

I think genres are fairly helpful when you're trying to describe something to someone but I can't stand when a music store is broken up into so many different sections that it actually makes it...
