Neil Peart is a great drummer, but I find him (and Rush) to be very overrated. I like them quite a bit but I wouldn't put them on a pedestal like others do.

I'd say that Vai is a far better songwriter than Satch, because Vai brings in many different techniques and styles to writing music than Satriani, who generally plays scales and plays uppity blues...
