90's underground i think of digable planets and a lot of jazz oriented stuff, as well as the beginnings of EL-P and rhymesayer guys.

I'm probably not the best candidate for the kind of comparison I'm making, as I don't listen to much newer hip hop at all. The fact that I'm ok with that probably says something too.
