Clint does tend to fall back on cliches as a director sometimes, but as you say it never really affects the quality of the whole film. The only examples I can think of where he eats his own tail if you will as director's with Space Cowboys and Invictus, which I still thought were far from being bad movies nonetheless.

Yeah, I watched them both a few months back. Flags Of Our Fathers is a very good war movie, but I wouldn't call it brilliant exactly. I absolutely loved Letters From Iwo Jima, to the point that along with Unforgiven it's my favourite film that Clint's directed. Definitely worth a watch.
