Why do you think there couldn't be something more advanced. Maybe millions of light years away, on a certain planet, life has been evolving thousands of times longer than here, and so they are much more advanced. The probability of us being the only life forms in the whole universe is very slim. The probability of us be the most evolved is also slim. Humans have been around for about 50,000 years. The universe is at least 14 billion years old. Whatever's out there could potentially have had quite a while to get beastie technology.
