You know, I am an atheist, but I've always been thinking "If god punishes everyone who doesn't live up to his rules, even though that person never really did anything wrong in their lives, he's an *******".

Seems more logical to me.
If there's a god he will know you're a good person, you've done your best to live a good life. If there's a god, I don't think he'd want you to pray and praise him, he'd just want you to be a good person. Seems reasonable.
