10. Alligator - The National
The first album that really got me into this band, my dad got it on one of his every 4 year album spree binges he used to do, and it was a huge standout for me, it was greatly instrumental in the change in my music taste going into high school.
9. The Sunset Tree - The Mountain Goats
It was a really tough call between this one and Tallahassee, but I've had The Sunset Tree for a longer time and it did help me through more rough times. Not to mention it is an incredibly fantastic album.
8. The Creek Drank The Cradle - Iron & Wine
It's the album that got me hugely into modern folk, which was and still is a huge part of my music taste right now. An absolutely beautiful album.
7. X/O - Elliott Smith
Another one of my dad's pickups that I learned to love, I played this album to death in 9th and 10th grade, he was such a brilliant singer-songwriter who left us too soon, plus he was an influence on a lot of bands I love now.
6. Rubies - Destroyer
This is not only one of my favorite albums of all time, but it actually has greatly impacted my life. It was the album that I used as a comparison on my college essay, it got me accepted into all the colleges I wanted and my love/listening/analysis of it brought me up to the next level.
5. Greetings From Michigan! - Sufjan Stevens
It wasn't the first album I heard from him but it certainly became my favorite over time, the songs remind me of so many good and bad times.
4. Grand Ledge - Paul Baribeau
Listening to this album to me was like listening to every thought I ever had and wanted to make into a song but couldn't...made into a song.
3. Tonight - Jason Anderson
Mostly for two songs on it, but I love the whole album. July 4, 2004 and So Long hold so much personal significance now though. It always was a great album to listen to when I needed cheering up, or I needed to let loose frustrations. It was perfect.
2. Boys and Girls In America - The Hold Steady
My username is Charlemagne...I can't not have a Hold Steady album really high on this list. They've been my favorite band for such a long time, I discovered so many of my favorite bands through them and Finn's lyrics are just fantastic.
1. Red Demo/Yellow Demo - Tegan and Sara
While The Hold Steady are the most important band to me in terms of my musical tastes, Tegan and Sara are by far the most important band to me in terms of personal and emotional development. These demos were my go to albums to listen to whenever I was feeling depressed, hopeless, hurt etc. They never failed to make me feel better.
I could have included so many more, but I'll stick to that.
