reverse ranking, 1 being most important:-

10. King Crimson - Discipline

Yes, prog can be quirky and New Wave. Brilliant potpourri of styles that actually made me hungry for more prog.

9. The Grease Soundtrack

Probably my first real initiation into the world of rock, though the songs are mostly a pastiche of the 50s.

8. Iron Maiden - Powerslave

A golden archway to the world of metal.

7. Kate Bush - The Hounds of Love

Pop can be quirky and fun and even proggy (Side 2 is a song cycle called The Ninth Wave)

6. The Best of Otis Redding

If you want Soul, You got it.

5. Run DMC - Raisin' Hell

Though not a purist rap album, kudos for drawing me into that world.

4. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

The perfect album for lovesickness.

3. The Beatles - 20 Greatest Hits

Yet another archway for sublime pretty pop-rock.

2. Bob Dylan - Greatest Hits Vol. 3, not the 1994 version, the 1968 version

This man sure can pull my heartstrings.

1. Captain Beefheart - Lick My Decals Off, Baby

I always thought Trout Mask was the shiznit but apprently you can layer it and make it sound more accessible at the same time.
