I don't know, I remember watching a lot of music video television in the 90's... Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Skid Row, Extreme... that stuff was still popular in that time, and played in heavy rotation. It never went away.

I hear people blame them for the killing of metal as well.. I read this whole long winded rant by someone... well, read it...

People today obviously don't know how much damage this piece of crap did 20 years ago. This album destroyed the entire metal scene. Not just the hair bands. Every single metal head got kicked in the nuts as a result of this album, and we're still suffering because of it.

People seem to have forgotten that if you were a metal head in the mid-90's, people were laughing at you. If you had talent, and knew how to sing or play guitar, they laughed at you. Metal was dead, and the grungers were pissing on our graves.

This was of course not just Nirvana's fault, but also the music industry. The majority of the people just follow trends, whatever is being promoted by the record compaines. And the music industry was still so powerful in the 90's they could control what the people "wanted". They could create a hype around basically anything, as long as they invested enough money. And that's what they did with grunge.

A Bruce Dickinson quote comes to mind "They can sell people crap, and make them eat it"

If you wonder why nobody listens to metal anymore, and why every single rock/metal band are removed from the hit-lists and media, why kids are now listening to rap, pop, country, R and B instead of rock, look no further. This was the beginning of the end.

If you analyze what most people really want, when they're not affected by the hype of the media, they just want a good show, with good melodic tunes performed by good looking and talented singers and musicians (American Idol is a perfect example of this). Music that makes them feel either good or excited.

In the 80's, rock and metal was one of the main providers of good melodic music by cool/good looking people and really cool stage shows. Some more heavy than others, but it was still all about writing good music. Then the nastiness and depression of grunge came along, where it was forbidden to have a cool image, write good songs or even have a stage show. And I honestly believe that it put A LOT of people off rock music for good.

Although the album and style was a hit at the time, most people quickly got enough of the depressive ugliness, and turned to other melodic sources instead. They had no other choice, cause the melodic metal scene was dead.

If this crap-fest hadn't been released, rock and metal would have had the chance to evolve naturally and remain a part of the popular culture. Metal bands were already trying real hard to reinvent themselves in the early 90's, getting into heavier directions and away from the cheesiness of hair metal. They would without question have been able to stay fresh, and revolve around the natural musical direction of the world.

Instead the real talents were laid off and forced underground. Just because the damn music industry got lucky with this one ugly record, and the bands and albums that followed it.
