Very surprised that this was your first viewing! Quality and proof that Gilliam can do style AND substance sometimes. The Hamster Factory 90 min doc is superb too about the making of the movie. Not sure whether this on the American DVD but I am pretty sure it should be.
Have you ever caught Chris Marker's La Jetee short film on which this was based? It is a mini classic in the short film genre although not to all tastes admittedly.
