You have to understand that if a gay man does not act "flamboyant", it makes it extremely difficult to identify him as gay. Whereas for heterosexual people, you can just assume that everyone of the opposite sex is also heterosexual, so "finding a mate" (so to speak) is extremely easy. Imagine if all gay men acted completely straight... they would never know who to hit on, who to ask out, who to act interested in, etc, and that cuts down the ~2% (given that ~4% of the population is homosexual) potential pool of suitors to an even smaller number, effectively limiting their realm of dating to gay bars/clubs where it's safe to assume that most people are gay.

IDK if that makes sense, it's kind of hard to explain.
