There's never been the slightest thing punk, post or otherwise, about those overblown pop weinies.
Sonic Youth's debut and Confusion is Sex (the first two you mention) are deeply rooted in punk and obviously it's post as it's boundary stretching. They're straight out of Branca and No Wave which is definitive post-punk. And yes, I've heard those records and the fact that you would defend U2 in a 'punk' context while simultaneaously dismissing Sonic Youth seriously destroys your credibility.
