My opinion of the band was already cemented when I came back and listened to their self-titled album, and while I enjoyed it immensely, I was already a big fan of the band and I think that spark was lost. When it came to listening to Wheels of Steel it was something new for me and ultimately left a greater impression. Saxon wins by virtue of being the first one I listened to.

Same here. I heard Killers before the debut and it is still probably my favourite Maiden album and I heard Saxon at virtually the same time with both Wheels Of Steel and Strong Arm Of The Law getting plenty of listens.
Maiden's debut is much raw sounding and obviously has some classics: Prowler, Phantom Of The Opera etc but the production wasn't great (something the band have always stated) and it lacks a little cohesion to me but then I much prefer Strong Arm Of The Law to Wheels Of Steel from Saxon even though Wheels Of Steel has the magnificent 747 (Strangers In The Night) on it. I will have to plump for Maiden. Just.
