It is generally accepted that metal hit a low point in mainstream popularity in the US after glam metal ended, despite the success of Metallica. That is how the term "New Wave of American Heavy Metal" came about. It kind of started with Pantera in the early nineties, but really took off in the late nineties with nu metal acts and that mainstream momentum has continued to grow with many different genres (especially melodic metalcore).
