How's this, what if I wrote something where, without saying it, you were led to believe that it was taking place in the US, but I refered to a place where it never stopped raining.
We can conceive of rain, and a landscape like the US, but where rain cosntantly falls is slightly above the norm. Thats what I'm looking for. Things like this.

I definitely think you should check out Márquez then. His book
Of Love and Other Demons, for example, contains a girl whose red hair continues growing long after her death but is otherwise a realistic story told in the real world.
Also, have you ever read
Life of Pi by Yann Martel? If you haven't, check it out. I'd say it also fits the bill.
