Djent

Pioneered by the Swedish Extreme Metal outfit Meshuggah, djent music has carved out its own little scene within the metal universe. The word itself is an onomatopoeia to describe the downtuned, palm muted riffs that are the most recognizable element of the style.

The sound of djent is characterized by extremely downtuned guitars, odd time signature riffing, low frequency bass and usually harsh vocals (but not always). Djent drumming often uses complex polyrhythmic patterns. Typically the bass drum follows the rhythm of the guitars to accentuate the overall rhythm of the song. Djent bass tends to follow the guitar lines but has been known to do its own thing depending what on band you're listening to at the time.

Fairly recently, many deathcore and metalcore bands have begun to incorporate djent style, syncopated riffing into their trademark breakdowns as well.

So Let's get the discussing going! Talk about your favs of the genre, the genre itself, or if you haven't heard djent before...give your opinion!

Some of my favorite groups in the style:

The Godfathers, Meshuggah:

Textures from Denmark:

Progressive Deathcore group The Contortionist from my hometown of Indy:

Sort of poppy take on the style, also becoming pretty popular on the web. Periphery:

Born of Osiris:

There are MANY more out there, you just have to look!
