I like Bring Me The Horizon.
I had the preconception that they were just a bunch of scene kids who made pointless noise, but I gave them a listen, and there are some really good songs on their latest albums.
Architects are also a good modern harder band. Not quite sure if they fall into the 'hardcore' category, but they're worth a listen.

To answer your question, whatever happened to garage music?
It seemed to just fizzle out around the end of 2001.
