If you're looking for something similar to that you should check out the band Acid Bath, they're one of the big influences in Mastodon's sound. I'd recommend their second album
Paegan Terrorism Tactics (1996). It's mostly clean vocal (the guttural vocals can be a huge turn off for a lot of people), and isn't so heavy that it feels like it's physically assaulting you, yet still heavy enough to headbang to. If you're into macabre you'll also get a kick out of the lyrics which can be very tongue-in-cheek.
