I'd definitely check out some of Devin Townsend's solo material. His discography is pretty large so I'd start off at the beginning and just work your way up. His 1997 solo debut Ocean Machine is a pretty awesome album for a guy who was so young, and the polar opposite from his other album from '97 City by Strapping Young Lad.

I'd also recommend checking out the Norwegian group Green Carnation, you can either start off with their 2000 debut Journey to the End of the Night or go for their 2001 follow-up Light of Day, Day of Darkness. The latter is a 60-minute metal epic that is truly awe inspiring, but I still prefer their debut.

Also here's a mix I made last year, you might find something on it you like.
